Three Barstow police officers honored for pulling woman from burning building
BARSTOW — On Valentine’s Day, City Hall was a room full of blue, but not gloom. Several Barstow firefighters and Barstow police officers, all dressed in their blue uniforms, filled the City Council chamber Thursday to praise three police officers for saving a local woman’s life. On Nov. 27, Cpl. Daniel Arthur and officers Frank Benitez and David Edwards responded to a report of an apartment fire near the police station on the 500 block of South Second Avenue. Benitez said when they arrived the apartment was on fire and several neighbors told them that no one was inside. However, Benitez said, Arthur insisted the three head into the apartment and check for people. Inside, the police officers used a fire extinguisher to suppress the flames and found a woman lying on the kitchen floor. “I just wanted to check for myself,” Arthur said. “It’s a good thing we did.” The officers carried the woman out of the apartment and got her medical treatment. She has since made a full recovery, said Fire Chief Darrell Jauss. The three officers received applause from firefighters of the Barstow Fire Protection District and its governing board. The board’s director, Paul Courtney, said the officers put their lives on the lines and risked a great sacrifice to protect and serve the community. Fire Capt. Steve Ross thanked officers on behalf of the firefighters and said their actions changed the outcome of the fire. “They went above the call of duty, and I want to thank them for that,” Ross said. Ross also thanked the district’s governing board for securing $150,000 in additional funding from the county. The money was given to the district in October 2006. The district received the check from the county on Thursday. The money will go toward training.

Just goes to show... Even if you get stopped by one of these fine and outstanding men, you should not be mad at them for doing their job. They would risk their own lives and welfare just to save yours.
